Well, I'm going with C. And it probably isn't the first time someone said that either.

It's the first time where I can actually drive to their house and smack them until they understand.

No, no, no, you adopt a White midget if you want to raise a racecar driver.

I'm gonna go with Option C because someone once told me something pretty similar. Only, they wanted to adopt a black kid and one of my future kids (I'm Latina) because cute. I think they somehow forgot that "cute" kids of color grow up into real, actual, thinking and autonomous human beings just like everyone else.

Sure looks like it.

Adopting outside race due to the fact that there are a lot of non-anglo kids in the system that need parents is one thing. Adopting outside race because one is trying (like a halfwit) to construct a Sesame Street mixed race wonderland of kids that will grow up having a case of "you're different" rubbed in their face as consequence... yeah, no. That's another.

I mean, the first can be broadly paternalistic, but the second is just idiotic. Unintended consequences? You're soaking in 'em!

I'd say patronizing more than paternalistic. Adopting regardless of race because you want to raise a human being, because you want to give a loving home to a child, is awesome. Adopting despite race because there's more "supply" than "demand" of one race or another and so you're "settling" in some sense is bullshit. (Further bullshit if you view taking in a different-race-from-yourself child as some form of charity). But worst of all is what my friend literally told me: that she wanted my hypothetical children and black children because our kids are just so cute. She then went on to list physical traits that make us cute. Children of color (and children in general) are not fashion accessories.

Yep. *patronizing* is what I meant. Specifically in the sense of "oh, charity". Also, kids are not pokeymans. That being said, there are toxic practices in place in some areas - social workers refusing to permit adoption across race, which is the other side of the coin. "Can we see the kids who are up for adoption?" "This room is off limits!" Some of these areas expressly have many more non-anglo and mixed race kids, but restrict paler adoptive parents to the pale. Trophy adoption is wrong, but I'm also of the opinion that saying someone must belong to/be raised in this or that culture because of their race is... what's the word, racist? There's no easy way to *know* someone's motives in adoption, more's the pity.

Then again, what the hell do I know. Have an uncle who married a Korean, adopted a local orphan who was probably Korean/latino, and that kid went on to marry a blond Brazilian. Then there's my dad's cousin who married a guy with a background from India... I could go on for pages. What I'm saying is my racial give-a-shit-o-meter is broken.

Adopting is very tricky regardless, because it discriminates against the un-cute regardless of race? Maybe. It's not like a lottery would work that well in the short term either, because that'd mean minorities almost with certainty adopted out to non-minorities, and make for a generation of awkwardness.
